2018 BACA Pinch Hitter Carignan
Carignan - Hemar Vineyard, Sonoma County 2018 Vintage

Sonoma County AVA - Hemar Vineyard
Among the diverse grape varieties in historic Californian field-blends, Carignan was a favorite. It’s less commonly found as a stand-alone wine. This wine is a product of vines planted in 1900 and with age they have come in their to own. The resulting wine is uniquely old-world in character. Some was blended with our zins adding breadth, color and acid. But we couldn’t resist saving a few barrels to enjoy on its own!

Pinch Hitter is classic expression of Old Vine Carignan. Historically a grape used in California field blends, this 100% Carignan from 120 year-old vines is delicate with earth-driven aromas and subtle fruit feedback: forest floor, just-ripe strawberry, dusty soil and plum. The nose hints at a more subtle wine, yet on the palate the texture is weighty and broad with chewy tannin. The fruit and oak are beautifully integrated with hints of smoke and structure. The finish is mouthwatering with notes of spice and a bright lift of acidity.
